Describe the principle of froth floatation process. What is the role of a stabiliser and of a depressant ? Give one example each.

Answer»

Solution :Froth floatation PROCESS WORKS on the principle that the mineral particles are more wetted by oils and the gangue particles by water.
Stabilisers are those substances which stabilise the froth. Cresol and aniline are examples of stabilisers. The DEPRESSANTS are USED to prevent certain TYPE of particles from forming the froth, e.g., sodium cyanide prevents ZnS from forming the froth. Only PbS comes to the foam and is thus separated from ZnS.
