1.

Describe the role of Iodine in the refining of zirconium. Write chemical equations for the involved reactions.

Answer»

Solution :Pure ziroconium can be obtained from IMPURE Zr by van Arkel method. Crude Zr is heatedin an evacuated vessal with iodine. The metal iodide being covalent volatilises.
`Zr +2I_(2) to ZrI_(4)`
The metal iodide is heated on a TUNGSTEN filament, electrically heated to about 1800 K. Pure metal is DEPOSITED on the filament.
`ZrI_(4) to Zr +2I_(2)`.
