It is on account of the fact that a p-n junction diode conducts only when it is in forward bias arrangement but does not conduct in the reverse bias arrangement. During the POSITIVE half-cycle of input the p-n junction diode isin forward bias. Hence, a current flows through the resistor R and an output VOLTAGE is obtained ACROSS it. During the NEGATIVE half-cycle of input the diode, being in reverse bias, does not allow flow of current and hence output voltage across load resistor is zero.
