Ethanol, commonl,y called as alcohol, is an excellent solvent. It is used in medicines and is also an important starting material in the synthesis of many chemical compounds. However, in spite of its benefits to man, its impact on social behaviour has always been questioned. media has often shown abnormal behaviour of people while drunk. it is cosidered as a curve in the lives of those who are addicted to alcohol -'alcoholic' people are not only lowering their metabolism and affecting Central Nervous system, they are also a threat to the lives of others. anger ad rude behaviour are some of its ill effects. Now answer the following questions: (i) Comment on the statement- 'Should production of alcohol be banned'? Give three value reason to justify. (ii) As a student what initiative would you take in the common concern to 'Save Life', do not drink, give two suggestions.

Solution :(i) Alcohol is an important industiral solvent for paints, LACQUERS, varnishes, dyes, perfumes, tintures, cough syrups and MANY other medicines. It is also used an an antiseptic ad disinfectant and can also be used in the manufacture of important chemicals such as ether, chloroform, iodoform, acetic acid, etc. Iit is also being mixed with petrol and is used as a high octane fuel for automobiles. THEREFORE, its production cannot be BANNED. the best way is to regulate its production and supply.
(ii) Consumption of alcohol is a wide spread social evil. it has ruined many families and is the root cause of many unwanted deaths. therefore, a sense of awareness should be created in the MINDS of people who are addicted to drunking of alcohol. to do so alcoholics may be shown skits, plays and dramas highlighting bad effects of drinking alcohol. they can also be discouraged from drinking alcohol by writing articles in magazines and newspaper and by sloga writing at public places.
