Explain Rosenmund reduction. |
|
Answer» SOLUTION :Aldehydes can be PREPARED by the hydrogenation of acid chloride, in the presence of palladium supported by Barium sulphate. This reaction is called Rosenmund reduction `underset("Acetyl chloride")(CH_3 - undersetoverset(||)(O)(C )- Cl + H_2) overset(Pd//BaSO_4)(to) underset("Acetaldehyde")(CH_3-undersetoverset(||)(O)(C ) - H + HCl)` In the above reaction, `BaSO_4`act as a catalytic poison to palladium CATALYST, so that aldehyde cannot be further REDUCED to ALCOHOL. |
