1.

Explain structure of nucleic acids.

Answer»

Solution :A nucleoside is FORMED when the nitrogenous base is attached to 1. position of sugar. In nucleosides, the sugar CARBONS are numbered as 1., 2., 3. etc. in order to distinguish these from the BASES. When nucleoside is linked to phosphoric acid at 5.-position of sugar moiety, a nucleotide is obtained.

Nucleotides are joined by TOGETHER by phosphodiester linkage between 5. and 3. carbon atoms of pentose sugar which results in formation of dinucleotides.

A simplified version of nucleic acid chain is`-overset("Base")overset("| ")("Sugar")-"Phosphate"-(--overset("Base")overset("|")("Sugar")-"Phosphate"--)_(n)-overset("Base")overset("|")("Sugar")--`
