Explain the following terms with suitable examples : ( a ) Schottky defect ( b ) Interstitial defect .

Solution :(a) Schottky defect : It occurs when equal number of vacant cations and ANION sites are found in LATTICE STRUCTURE . It decreases the density of the substance . For example : `NaCl and KCI` .
(b) INTERSTITIAL defect : When some constituent particles (atoms or molecules or ions) occupy an interstitial site , the crystal is said to have interstitial defect . This defect INCREASES the density of the substance . Non - ionic solids show this detect.
