Corrosion is the process of FORMATION of a layer of OXIDE, sulphide, hydroxide, carbonate or hydrated oxide over a metal in presence or WATER and air or an acid.

E.g. when an iron article is placed openly in MOIST climate, it rusts.

4Fe+3O₂+nH₂O→2Fe₂O₃.nH₂O

This layer of hydrated oxide is reddish brown in COLOUR and is called as rust
