Explain why carboxylic acids are stronger acids than phenols? |
Answer» Solution :Carboxylate ion is more stable due to symmetrical resonating structure (equivalent) . So carboxylate ion is a weak base and carboxylic acid is STRONGER acid. PHENOXIDE ion is also stabilised due to RESONANCE and has non-equivalent resonance structures. With negative charge spreading to less ELECTRONEGATIVE CARBON , phenoxide ion is less stable than carboxylate ion . |
