Explain why low molecularr mass alcohols are soluble in water. |
| Answer» Solution :Solubility of alcohols in water `H_(2)O` is due to H-bonding betweenn the O-H group of alcohols and `H_(2)O` MOLECULES. The hydrocarbon part (i.e., R group) on the other HAND, TENDS to PREVENT the formation of H-bonds and thus tends to decrease the solubility of alcohols in `H_(2)O`. since in lower molecular mass alcohols, the hydrocarbon part is small, therefore, lower molecular mass alcohols are soluble in water. | |
