Explain why the stability of oxoacids of chlorine increases in the order given below : HClO lt HClO_2 lt HClO_3 lt HClO_4 |
|
Answer» Solution :Oxygen is more electronegative than CHLORINE. Therefore, dispersal of negative charge PRESENT on chlorine increases from `ClO^(-)` to `ClO_4^(-)` ion because the number of oxygen atoms attached to chlorine is increasing . Therefore stability of ions will INCREASE in the order. `ClO^(-) LT ClO_2^(-) lt ClO_3^(-) lt ClO_4^(-)` . Hence the acidic STRENGTH of the acids will increase in the same order. |
