1.

Explainthe following terms : (i) Invert sugar(ii) Polypeptides.

Answer»

Solution :(i)Invert sugar : SUCROSEIS dextrorotatorybut after hydrolysis it givendextrorotatory glucose and laevorotatory fructose . Laevorotation of FRUCTOSEIS morethan thedextrorotationof glucose. Thereforethe mixtureis laveorotatory. Thushydrolysis of sugarbrings about inversion of sign of rotation formdextro (+) to laevo (-). The PRODUCT OBTAINED is calledinvert sugar.
(ii) Polypeptides : Peoptide linkageis an amideformedbetween - COOH group and `- NH_(2)` group. The reactionbetween twomolecules of SIMILAR ordifferent amino acidsprocceds through the combination of the amino group of onemolecule withthe carboxyl group of the otherwhen itsthe numberof suchamino group is ten m thenthe products are called polyeptides.
