Answer» This poem has been written by the Kannada poet Kuvempu and translated into Hindi by Dr. M. Vimala. In this poem, we witness a conversation between a mother and her daughter. The daughter asks her mother why she must wear gold jewellery. The daughter tells her mother that the gold jewellery causes her trouble and she does not want it. She then asks her mother why she must wear such colourful clothes. She is not able to play in the mud because her colourful clothes will get soiled. The mother replies to her daughter that the jewellery and colourful clothes will make her look beautiful and pleasing. The daughter asks who will find her beautiful and be pleased by her appearance. The mother replies that people who look at her will find her beautiful and that will please the mother. The daughter complains that by wearing jewellery she will be bound by it. In the last stanza, the daughter implores her mother to understand that her childhood and her mother’s motherhood itself are two great jewels for the daughter. The daughter tells her mother that she is a jewel for her mother, and the mother herself is a jewel for her daughter. Thus, the daughter asks her mother – of what use are all other jewels and trinkets? |
