Give one chemical test to distinguish between the following pairs of compounds : Ethylamine and aniline |
|
Answer» Solution :Ethylamine `(CH_(3)CH_(2)NH_(2))` is a primary aliphatic amine while aniline `(C_(6)H_(5)NH_(2))` is a primary aromatic amine. Action of nitrous acid `(HNO_(2))`: Ethylamine gives a brisk effervescence of `N_(2)` gas with the formation of alcohol. `UNDERSET("Ethylamine")(CH_(3)CH_(2)NH_(2))+HONO underset(dil.HCl(273-278K))overset(NaNO_(2))(rarr)underset("Ethanol")(CH_(3)CH_(2)OH)+N_(2)uarr+H_(2)O` Aniline reacts with `HNO_(2)` under the above conditions to form benzenediazonium chloride which on treatment with alkaline solution of b-naphthol (2-naphthol) gives an orange dye (Azo dye TEST).
