Solution :(1) `SO_(2)`, as a reducing agent : In moist condition, SULPHUR dioxidereduces `FE^(3+)` to `Fe^(2+)` or `Mn^(7+)` in `KMnO_(4)` to `Mn^(2+)`.
(a) `2FeCl_(3) + SO_(2) +2H_(2) O to 2FeCl_(2) + H_(2)SO_(4) +2HCl`
(b) `2KMnO_(4) + 2H_(2)O + 5SO_(2) to K_(2)SO_(4) + 2MnSO_(4) + 2H_(2) SO_(4)`
(2) `SO_(2)` as an oxidising agent : `SO_(2)` oxidises `H_(2)S(S^(2-))` to `S^(0)` or ferrous choride ,`Fe^(3+) Cl_(2)`to FERRICCHLORIDE , `Fe^(3+)Cl_(3)` .
