In this process the ore is mixed with coke and heated at `1800^@C` in presence of nitrogen, where AIN is formed. `Al_2O_3 + 3C + N_2 to 2AIN + 3CO` `SiO_2` is reduced to silica that GETS volatillised off at `1800^@C`. `SiO_2 + 2C to SI + 2CO`.
