1.

How does Portia establish justice in the play The Merchant of Venice? Discuss.

Answer»

Explanation:

Act 4 scene 1 emphasises on the difference between justice and mercy. Shylock is unable to UNDERSTAND his LOOPHOLES in his claim and demands justice without granting any mercy.

Young JUDGE, puts him into his own trap by saying, Not more by a hair, nor less and no blood as it is not into his agreement.

However when table turns against him, it is the very same mercy shown by the Christian that spares his life. Shylock, although tries to avenge over Antonio's misdeeds, he goes to an EXTREME while seeking revenge and clear that he has murder in his mind. This is taken up by Portia as the act of KILLING.
