How many independent equations are possible, if only one component exists in each stream?(a) 1(b) 2(c) 3(d) 4I have been asked this question during an online exam.Query is from Material Balances Problems Involving Multiple Units topic in portion The Chemical Reaction Equation & Stoichometry, Material Balances for Processes Involving Reaction and Multiple Units of Basic Chemical Engineering

Answer»

The correct ANSWER is (b) 2

To elaborate: For whole PROCESS: 1 + 2 = 4 + 5, for first REACTOR: 1 + 2 = 3, for second reactor: 3 = 4 + 5, but if we equate second and third equation we get the first one, so there are 2 independent equations.
