How many isomers are possible for an octahedral complex of the type MA_(2)B_(2)C_(2) ?

Answer»

3
4
5
6

Solution :It has five GEOMETRICAL isomers (diasteroisomers) of which one is optically active. First, the members of all THREE pairs of LIKE ligands may be either TRANS to each other or cis to each other. Then members of one of the pairs may be trans to each other, but the members of the other two pairs are cis. There is no trans-trans cis isomer. Finally cis-cis-cis isomer is optically active and thus EXIST as two enantiomers.
