how will you distinguish chemically ethanol and ethanoic acid? |
|
Answer» Ethanol has sweet odour while ethanoic acid has pungent odour. Ethanol does not react with sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO₃) but ethanoic acid reacts with sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO₃) releasing CO2 gas. Ethanol does not change the colour of blue litmus paper while ethanoic acid change the colour of blue litmus to red. We can distinguish between ethanol and ethanoic acid by reacting them with a metallic carbonate like Na2CO3or a bicarbonate like NaHCO3....... Ethanoic acid reacts to give to give CO2and no reaction takes place in case of ethanol. 2CH3COOH + Na2CO3----------> CH3COONa + H2O + CO2 CH3CH2OH +Na2CO3-------------> NO REACTION... SAME CASE WITH NaHCO3. |
