(i) How will you prepare: (a) Acetic anhydride and (b) Acetyl chloride from acetic acid? . Write the reactions involved in each case. (ii) Why is the boiling point of an acid anhydride higher than the acid from which it is derived?

Answer»

Solution :
(b) `CH_3- oversetunderset(||)(O)(C ) -OH + PCI_5 to CH_5COCl + POCl_3 + HCL`
(II) Acid anhydrides are bigger SIZED molecules than the corresponding acids, therefore have more surface AREA, more van der Waals. forces of attraction and hence higher boiling points.
