1.

If P(A ∪ B) = P(A) + P(B), then what can be said about the events A and B?

Answer»

We know–

P(A ∪ B) = P(A) + P(B) – P(A ∩ B)

⇒ P(A ∩ B) = 0

[∵ P(A ∪ B) = P(A) + P(B)]

∴ P(A ∩ B) = 0

[∵ P(A ∪ B) = P(A) + P(B)]

The events A and B are mutually exclusive.
