If X and Y are the carbon-halogen bond enthalpies in chloroethane and bromoethane respectively, what is the relationship between X and Y?(a) X > Y(b) X < Y(c) X = Y(d) X + Y = 0I have been asked this question in semester exam. This is a very interesting question from Nature of C-X Bond in section Haloalkanes and Haloarenes of Chemistry – Class 12

Answer» CORRECT option is (b) X < Y

The best I can explain: Since the C-F bond length will be shorter than the C-Cl bond length DUE to the smaller size of F atom, it will require more energy to break the C-F bond, HENCE the enthalpy value of C-Cl bond will be LOWER than that of C-F bond.
