In the reaction 2NO+Cl_2 to 2NOCl, it has been found that doubling the concentration of both the reactants increases the rate by a factor of eight but doubling the chlorine concentration alone only doubles the rate. Which of the following statements is incorrect?

Answer»

The reaction is first ORDER in ` Cl_2`
The reaction is second order in NO
The overall order of reaction is 2
The overall order of reaction is 3.

Solution :`(i) r_(1) = k [ NO]^(x) [Cl_(2)]^(y)`
(ii) `8 r_(2) = k [ 2NO]^(x) [2Cl _(2)]^(y)`
(III) `2r_(3)= k [NO]^(x) [2Cl_(2) ]^(y)`
Dividing (ii) by (iii) , `4 = 2^(x)`
or x = 2
Dividing (iii) by (i) , 2 = `2^(y)` or y = 1 .
Overall order x+ y = 2 + 1= 3.
