The discovery was made by astronomers led by Olga Cucciati of Bologna's National Astrophysics Institute. Hyperion was found using data from VIMOS Ultra-Deep Survey done by VIMOS instrument on European Southern Observatory's (ESO) Very Large Telescope in Chile. VIMOS is an instrument that measures objects at a distance of billions of light years away.
