Name the semiconductor device that can be used to regulate an unregulated d.c. power supply. With the help of I-V characteristics of this device, explain its working principle.

Answer»

Solution :A zener diode is used to regulate an unregulated d.c. power supply. The characteristics of zener diode have been shown
It is clear that in reverse bias the current is EXTREMELY small but when the applied reverse bias voltage reaches the breakdown voltage `V_(z)`of the zener diode, there is a large change in the current. At breakdown voltage a large change in the current can be produced by almost insignificant change in the reverse bias voltage. Thus, EFFECTIVELY zener voltage remains constant, even THOUGH current through the zener diode varies over a wide range. This property of zener diode is used to regulate supply voltages.
