[NiC_(4)]^(2-)It is paramagnetic while Ni[CO_(4)] is diamagnetic though both are tetrahedral Why

Answer»

Solution :In `[Nicl_(4)]^(2-), Ni^(2+)`is co-ordinated with FOUR `Cl^(-)` ligands and follows `sp_(3)` HYBRIDIZATION with two unpaired electrons on `Ni^(2+)` whereas in `[Ni(CO)]_(4)`, the Ni atom is co-ordinated with four CO ligands follows `sp^(3)`hybridization having no unpaired electrons on Ni atom as `Cl(-)` is weak field ligand and CO is strong field.
