One of the most frightening and destructive phenomenaof nature is a severe earthquake and its terrible aftereffects. Earthquakes are the result of forces deep withinthe earth's interior that continuously affects the surfaceof the earth. The energy from these forces is stored in avariety of ways within the rocks. When this energy isreleased suddenly, an earthquake occurs. The area of thefault where the sudden rupture takes place is called thefocus or hypo-centre of the earthquake. The point on theearth's surface directly above the focus is called theepicentre of the earthquake. The effect of an earthquakeon the earth's surface is called the intensity. Theintensity scale consists of a series of responses such asthe number of people who woke up, movement offurniture, damage to chimneys and finally totaldestruction. The magnitude of 5.3 might be a moderateearthquake, and a strong earthquake might be rated withthe magnitude 6.3. An earthquake in a densely populatedarea which results in many deaths may have the samemagnitude but acts only as a shock in a remote area thatdoes nothing more than frightening the wildlife.
