Products of electrolysis depends upon which factors? Justify with suitable examples.

Answer»

SOLUTION :(i) Products of electrolysis depends on the nature of material being electrolysed.
(ii) The type of ELECTRODES being used if the electrode is inert (e.g., platinum or gold), it does not participate in the chemical reaction and acts only as source or SINK for electrons. on the other hand, if the electrode is reactive it participates in the electrode reaction.
Different oxidising and reducing species present in the electrolytic cell and their standard electrode potentials: species with more `E^(THETA)` value get REDUCED and species with less `E^(Theta)` value get oxidized.
e.g., : In electrolysis of NaCl in inert electrode, `Na^(+) and H_(2)O`, two species are available near cathode, but only `H_(2)O` get reduced and `Na^(+)` does not get reduced.
e.g., in electrolysis of `H_(2)SO_(4)` solution in presence of Pt electrode, here oxidation of water is carried out and it will gives `O_(2)` while `SO_(4)^(2-)` doesn.t get oxidized.
