Q. 10. Define dipole moment. What are its units? |
Answer» A dipole moment is a measurement of the separation of two opposite electrical charges. Dipole moments are a vector quantity. The magnitude is equal to the charge multiplied by the distance between the charges and the direction is from negative charge to positive charge: μ = q · r.The SI unit for electric dipole moment is thecoulomb-meter. This is too large to be practical on the molecular scale. Bond dipole moments are commonly measured in debyes, represented by the symbol D, which is obtained by measuring the charge in units of 10−10statcoulomb and the distance d in Angstroms. |
