Solve : 0271 error (check date & time)?

Answer»

Hello:

I'm trying to restore an older HP computer for fun, but as it boots the system will give me 2 short beeps and then will proceed to give me an error 0271 Check date and time!  I think this has something to do with the bios but I can't even get into the bios to fix it.  Can any one please help?Unplug the machine from the power supply. MAKE sure you are properly grounded and replace the CMOS battery: it's about the size of a dime and can be bought just about any comp. store/Radio Shack etc.  #CR 2032 part number.
While you have the case off check for any dust bunnies/dirt etc. You can blow these out with a can of compressed air.

Some systems have the battery hard wired or soldered to the MOTHERBOARD.  If this is the case, you may have to take it to a repair shop to have it REMOVED and have a new one soldered in its place.

Good to see a new face here at the forum!

With some old machines it is not necessarily the CMOS battery but the BIOS itself that can't handle the date. If you can get to a DOS prompt, just use the "time" and "date" commands to set them. If the BIOS is not year 2k compatable, you have to do this every time you turn the machine off and on again.Yep!

For help doing this, at the COMMAND prompt, type

time /?

and type

date /?

Docwith real DOS you can type time and then enter any changes if needed. same thing for date.Thanx for the GREETING, pcdoc !
