Solve : 1.8 GHz P4 freeze during POST?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a Gigabyte 8ST800 motherboard with a PENTIUM 4 1.8GHz processor that I bought. When I boot it, it freezes just after counting the memory during POST. I've tried different settings for processor and bus speeds but none of them work. The BIOS is the latest version and I'm using DDR 400 memory. What could be wrong? So it is new and has never worked CORRECTLY is that right?

Is this a new power supply and sufficient to run it?

Start by STRIPPING down to processor/fan, dieo, and 1 stick of RAM after reassembling and rechecking all connections. Does this boot? If so add one thing at a time until the culprit is found. Are there motherboard jumpers? Is the processor seen correctly at boot? Do you have any experience with doing this?Quote

It's just video card, RAM, PSU and mobo; I tried the P4 with another mobo - same result (computer freezes during POST). The mobo does see it as "Intel (R) Pentium 4 Processor 1800 MHz (100x18.0)".Do you have another CPU to try on your MB? You could take that CPU to a repair shop and have them test it. It's usually free or very little charge and would keep from guesswork and needless purchasing.
