Solve : 32 and 64 bit processor confusion? |
|
Answer» ok, i have a Sony Vaio PCG-3C2L, i found out that it had a replaceable processor in it when i replaced the fan. i have been searching for a new processor but i dont want to buy one that wont work, i know that my processors socket is "Socket P" and it is 2GHz (exactly why i want to replace it). i wanted to know if the motherboard will accept a 64 bit processor. if not, where can i find a dual core 2.8GHz or higher processor for a 32 bit system? Quote i found out that it had a replaceable processor in it when i replaced the fanCan you post the link? I cannot find one either for the manual description of the laptop model nor any replaceable parts online. Though I had thoughts its that possible to be replaceable if its an upgrade or the same since its strictly for a notebook computer. When you talk about 32 and 64 bit type, it is mostly but not all compatible when it comes to running software as called backward compatible. But not in hardware components which is by design or specific. Its either you replace the same processor or the whole mobo.well... sorry but i dont know what link to reply, can you specify? and i dont know if my system is or is not 64 Bit, i know i have windows 7 32 but i was going to restore the laptop to check if it was 64, here is the link to the best info i could find on my laptop http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=VGN-CS115JR-OB&cat=NBB And this is the link for the processor i wanted to replace my stock one with: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=mobile+processors+p+socket&hl=en&safe=off&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&biw=1280&bih=675&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=8626494157931704932&sa=X&ei=ewszT8f4KoXY2AX0ypi_Bw&ved=0CGIQ8wIwAA#scoring=tpThe Sony Vaio PCG-3C2L ships with a T5800, which is a 64-bit, 2.00 GHZ processor. Many laptops have replaceable processors-here is a guide as to how to upgrade: http://www.pcworld.com/article/148910/replace_your_laptops_cpu.html http://ark.intel.com/products/35563/Intel-Core2-Duo-Processor-T9600-(6M-Cache-2_80-GHz-1066-MHz-FSB) http://ark.intel.com/products/35581/Intel-Core2-Duo-Processor-T5800-(2M-Cache-2_00-GHz-800-MHz-FSB) I think you should be fine. The T5800 is a pPGA478, whereas the T9600 is a PGA478. They are compatible. The extra P just means plastic; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pin_grid_array has nothing to do with the socket. According to the one of the reviews here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819111006 A user upgraded a 13'' Dell Vostro with a GM45 Chipset which has a pPGA478 CPU, with the T9600 and had no issues. EDIT: http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/sony-vaio-vgn-cs115j/1707-3121_7-33342075.html GM45 Chipset. All Clear. Thanks! now, does the front side bus speed matter at all? i mean, does it have to be compatible with my comp? because i think i saw on the specs that it is 800MHz and this one would be compatible too right? http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=mobile+processors&hl=en&safe=off&tbas=0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&biw=1280&bih=675&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=14437488140647817981&sa=X&ei=U8UzT5s4s6awAtPr9OwB&ved=0CLEBEPMCMAM#scoring=tpwait a sec... i restored my computer (to check if it was 64 bit) but its not, my laptop is from 2007, idk if it can still support a 64 bit processor, if not, are there any places i can find some good P socket, 2.7GHz or higher, dual core processor? It supports a 64-bit processor with 64-bit disabled? That's odd... But good catch there... I wasn't able to find any models of your laptop with a 1066 MHz FSB. However, Intel says that the GM45 Express chipset: http://ark.intel.com/products/chipsets/35509 is compatible with 1066 MHz processors. For safety there is the http://ark.intel.com/products/33917/Intel-Core2-Duo-Processor-T9300-(6M-Cache-2_50-GHz-800-MHz-FSB) T9300 2.5 GHz with a 800MHz FSB. Do note that just because a processor has a higher frequency doesn't mean that it will perform better than another. If at all possible I really would bring the laptop to a store and try out different processors-the lack of information on this laptop online is a problem, and we don't want to make the wrong purchase-laptop processors can be six times as expensive as their desktop counterparts.I am really confused about this... the chipset you posted reads that the max memory is 8 GIGS, and mine lists that it can only hold 4 gigs ddr2 max. i just checked speccy (to check the chipset) and it reads "GM45/GM47", i dont know whats wrong here. i remembered one program that identified the exact computer model, the computer model it listed was: "Sony VGN-CS VGN-CS110E". i just looked this up and these specs seem to fit with my comp: http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&partNumber=VGNCS110E/P/BSTOCK#specifications i took some screenshots of the results from speccy and the driver software if that could help to figure out if this is compatable with a good 64bit processor (im stressing 64bit and 2.5GHz or more because i need it for Adobe After Effects CS5) [year+ old attachment deleted by admin]Speccy not too RELIABLE, try HWInfo32 or HWInfo64 depending on your OS. http://www.hwinfo.comWOW! i like this program a lot more than speccy, but i have a few questions... 1. it says that ddr3 is supported, but i have ddr2 ram, does that mean i can install ddr3 ram into my laptop? 2. where can i find whether or not the motherboard is 64bit compatable? 3. it says my motherboard has 3 PCI Express x1 slots, does this mean i can install a new mobile graphics card? 4. i see somthing in my processor under the "extended feature flags" that says "64Bit extentions - Present", does this mean that this is a 64 bit processor? and it says that my computer is a: "Sony VGN-CS110E" the motherboard's name is the "Intel GM45 (Cantiga-GM) + ICH9M (Base)" [year+ old attachment deleted by admin]I know of no laptop that supports 2 different types of RAM. Maybe other models of your laptop chipset support DDR3, but since you have DDR2 RAM, no. DDR3 RAM will not fit into a DDR2 slot. Mobile graphics cards do not use mini PCI-E, they are either soldered ONTO the motherboard or they use MXM: http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/ http://www.mxm-sig.org/ Mini PCI-E is mainly used for WWAN/WLAN/DVB tuner/extremely small SSDs like in the MacBook Air. This is one of the solutions for an external graphics card for laptops that relies on an expresscard slot: http://www.villageinstruments.com/tiki-index.php?page=ViDock "64Bit extensions - Present" Yes it is a 64-bit compatible processor. Quote from: droid200 on February 08, 2012, 09:27:47 PM ..., i know i have windows 7 32 ...HWInfo reports Windows 7 Ultimate which is 64-bit & 32-bit. I'm sure this was not shipped with the Sony Vaio laptop. Quote from: droid200 on February 13, 2012, 05:16:39 AM WOW! i like this program a lot more than speccy, but i have a few questions...1-4. Support means the functionality is there, but all the physical hardware may not exist. Chipset & cpu determine this. http://www.intel.com/Products/Notebook/Chipsets/GM45/GM45-overview.htm You are currently using a 32-bit OS, but your hardware already supports 64-bit. I wouldn't worry about trying to change cpu's. Have you attempted to install the 64-bit version of Win7? If you can install Win7-64, looks like you have 1-2GB RAM module, 1-1GB RAM module. You might be better off increasing RAM capacity, depending on the applications you use.yea, i was going to put another gig into it because it only supports four total. but is it possible that my processor is 64 bit when it was shipped with a 32 bit os (win Vista)? i looked in the device manager but it says under "matching device ID : acpi\genuineintel_-_x86" i know that x86 architecture is 32 bit but if it was 64 bit why would it say this? im really confused ( Quote from: droid200 on February 14, 2012, 06:44:35 AM I looked in the device manager but it says under "matching device ID : acpi\genuineintel_-_x86" i know that x86 architecture is 32 bit but if it was 64 bit why would it say this? im really confused (I have a 64-bit compatible processor http://ark.intel.com/products/42770/Intel-Celeron-Processor-E3200-(1M-Cache-2_40-GHz-800-MHz-FSB) running Windows XP SP3 32-bit and here is a screenshot under Device Manager: Its probably due to the fact that I'm running a 32-bit OS. Quote from: droid200 on February 09, 2012, 07:41:56 PM wait a sec... i restored my computer (to check if it was 64 bit) but its notHave you actually tried installing a 64-bit OS? Notice that the disc says "64-bit software"?i think i have, can i upgrade from 32 to 64 os without losing my data? |
