Which version of Windows XP? Home Edition or Professional? Original, Service Pack 1 (SP1), or SP2?
It would be helpful to "see" the exact message texts that you're getting if you get them again, and at what stage of the installation they appear. Do they appear during installation at the first reboot?
You should install Windows XP directly on the target machine to ensure the build is compatible with the target hardware environment (which you're probably doing).
In your BIOS Setup Utility pay particular attention to the "Power" menu page. My recollection with Windows XP is that you either build it for an ACPI system or an APM system. Should you change your mind as to which you want to use, you need to rebuild (reinstall) the Windows XP operating system.
ACPI - Advanced Configuration and Power Interface APM - Advanced Power Management
Newer systems, like yours would normally be built for ACPI. I believe this means you need to setup the BIOS correctly before the installation begins.
Here are some links on power management: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_management

The following link might be the "pearl" you're SEEKING. Half-way down the article there is a box entitled "The Role of the F5 Key and Shutdown Problems". You might have to manually select (from the LIST), the correct Hardware Abstraction LAYER (HAL) to build for your system. Unfortunately I don't know which one you need (MAYBE ACPI Multiprocessor PC???):
