Solve : actual phsyical work on a hard drive?

Answer»

Ok, so a few days ago i bought a new hd. my plan had been to make it my external and make my external a slave..sounds easy. well apperantly its not. when i changed the jumper settings and put it in the computer it started MAKING a weird clicking sound, so like any normal person i called tech support...complete waste of my time. so i went to work myself, i got the cover off, and saldy ruined a warranty on a drive that western DIGITAL put their name on but wont support. when i took off the cover, the screw pattern changed, so i called tech suport again and ASKED simply what tool to use. they just couldnt help me but apperantly the computer maker could. so i call gateway and they tell me that its off its bearings. so i am left looking at it and asking my self what bearings.. so i looked on the internet and all there is is software problems. normally i would let this go, however this drive has 70 gigs of movies i want back. so if anyone has any insite even as little as where i can get a screw driver for the star screws that would be AMAZING. how to fix it even better.
thanks if you can help, or if you want to help.Which screws are we talking about here - are you trying to take apart the hard drive itself? That would be FAIRLY pointless, unless you happen to be a data recovery expert and have a clinical environment in which to remove the platters. Hard drives are hermetically sealed for a good reason. I agree. There are NO user servicable parts, and a dead drive can be replaced, but the data will be gone. All hard drives die eventually and it is not a safe place for the only storage of any important data.

You can google for file recovery but those who do what you need done are VERY expen$ive. It would be cheaper to legally buy the movies than have them retrieved this way.so there really isnt any way for me to get my data back, or make the drive work again regardless of whats on it? and they are start shaped screws, but they are diffrent than what held the cover on the driveNo way for you to fix it, and if it has been opened exposing the platters, probably nothing anyone can do at all.
