Solve : adding hard drive from old pc to new pc?

Answer»

I was TOLD my mother BOARD was damaged by rough treament during shipping of my old pc.. I would like to add the hard drive from the old computer to the new one, so I can access the files on it. The old computer was a Dell Dimension 4200 with Windows ME. The new computer is Compaq Presario SR1710NX , with Windows xp home edition, 3400+ AMD sempron, 256 MB memory, 100GB hard drive.

First I would like to know if it at all possible to install the old hard drive and access the files on it. If this is possible, is it likely that any viruses on the hard drive cross over to the new system? If not, I will likely go ahead with the install, how is this done?

Also, is there anything else I can take from the old PC to improve the preformance of the new computer?

Thank you in advance It's very difficult to damage a motherboard if it's INSIDE a computer simply by shipping it. You should investigate further.
Simply connect the old hard drive as a slave to the new one.
You absolutely must have full anti viral/anti malware protection in place before doing so.
What security software do you have in place on your new system?I have Norton Personal Firewall, Anti Spam and Anti Virus 2005.
Re: mother board being damaged: the computer worked before shipping and got to the other end with the tower actually damaged, I disconected and reconnected everything and the computer would not power up at all.

Thanks for your help.

Unless the case damage (external) actually broke something on the mobo ...... it might be an idea to remove all the bits and pieces ........ CPU , Ram , any cards , PSU and front panel wiring .......then reassemble things ........the failure to start may have been caused by some item coming loose after the shock or shaking it received during the move.......

Who told you this ?

dl65 Norton AV does not afford good protection.
Install Ad Aware, Spybot, SpywareBlaster and A² or Ewido. Update them and run full scans. Ewido will run on XP only and is a trial version. It will remain operational as a scanner after it's trial PERIOD is up but realtime protection and automatic updates will cease.
A² Free has no realtime protection but is an excellent fully fledged trojan scanner.

Ad-Aware
Spybot S&D
SpywareBlaster

EwidoReminds me of the container that fell off the container crane, and the salvaged yacht (the owners rescued at sea) where the lifting strap broke and dropped the yacht onto the concrete quay right in front of the owners and the television crew.

I've given up driving cranes, honest.

Sorry to hear of your bad luck.

If you slave the drive successfuly you can scan it from your new computer.

I would add some more RAM to the new one if you want good performance.

256 MB plus.I took every thing out of the computer and reinstalled then when I turned it on I noticed that it did start momentarilly then shut down right away. I opened the power converter box and two of the CAPACITORS (they looked like capacitors) seemed to have some brown crusty stuff (dried electrolyte??) on top. I brought the inverter to the local electronic shop and he confirmed that it was pooched. The cables (power and to mother board) in the new computer do not seem to be the same size. Is this possible of am I looking at the wrong part? The damaged motherboard diagnoses was made by Staples. Had they used the 10 second test the guy at the electronics store did, I would of spent 40$ on a new inverter instead of 400$ on a new PC. Oh, well, I was looking for an excuse to buy a new PC, lol

Thanks everyone for your help. BTW I downloaded all the programs suggested.
