Solve : Adding IDE HD to New PC? |
|
Answer» I bought a new computer last week that has a 200Gb SATA drive. I have an old computer with an 60Gb IDE drive and I was going to add the old drive to the new computer for backup storage. The one IDE cable on the motherboard has two connectors on it already - one for the CD-ROM drive and one for the DVD-Writer. Do you only have one IDE channel? I have not SEEN that before.Ya, it only has one IDE channel. Didn't know this when I bought it (it's a new HP Pavillion). Might have to go the PCI route like what C_C suggested (but I really didn't want to use up a PCI slot - need it for a TV tuner). Hmmm.... Colin Quote (but I really didn't want to use up a PCI slot - need it for a TV tuner). Does it only have 3 PCI slots then? You can buy an external casing for your IDE HDD so that you can connect it to an USB port. Don't tell me that it only has 1 or 2 USB ports as well!I'll have to take a look again, but I'm pretty sure that there was only a Primary IDE connector (the other connector next to it was a smaller floppy connector). I have plenty of PCI and USB ports available, but if I'm going to spend $$ for new hardware to use this old HD, I might as well get myself a true backup external HD. Thanks for your help. Colin Quote a true backup external HD. What do you think is inside the expensive external DEVICES? If I were you, I would look into a conversion kit. That is, if your older HDD is still in good shape. No damaged sectors and no strange noises. Not quite suitable as a backup drive, otherwise.I think the internal PCI card which will allow you to add up to 4 more IDE devices would be the way to go. Easy to find on eBay for $10 or so. No need to pay for an extra drive if you already have one! Save some $$$$ It will work as well. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5810549308&ru=http://search.ebay.com:80/5810549308_W0QQfromZR40QQfviZ1forget emay........what o/s are you going to use.is this a laptop.Bet it's not a laptop with a 200 GIG SATA drive. Quote ...it's a new HP Pavillion)... Model Number? Quote Bet it's not a laptop with a 200 gig SATA drive. Shows how MUCH attention Merlin pays. lol! |
