Solve : And You Thought The Library Was Boring? |
|
Answer» Quote Gina says she couldn't believe her eyes. Monday afternoon, as she watched in amazement, a guy was sitting in the Gardens Branch Library looking at pornography on a library computer. READ the whole story here I am losing faith in humanity bit by bit. Seriously, if public *censored* is considered an offense due to indecent exposure, shouldn't public porn be an offense too? http://digitaljournal.com/article/307162 What. The. *censored*. However, some extremely liberal-minded people will definitely jump to the masturbators' defense about the right to freedom of expression of sexuality... etc. etc. EDIT: Maybe reading this informative article will put the masturbators' motives in a better light. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_addiction Quote from: Transfusion on September 28, 2011, 05:25:52 AM Seriously, if public *censored* is considered an offense due to indecent exposure, shouldn't public porn be an offense too?No. That doesn't logically follow. That would be the equivalent of making owning a baseball bat illegal because it can be used for an assault. from the article: Quote I don't want promiscuity, *censored* immorality in a public house Quote I don't think it's right. As me being a now a CHRISTIAN and a child of God, I don't think it's rightGet over yourselves. It's nice that you found a faith, but stop trying to force it's ideals and illogically derived concepts of "morals" on everybody else. It's not "immoral" to do that, it's just stupid. Quote http://digitaljournal.com/article/307162Hey, *snaps fingers* focus buddy, that's completely irrelevant. First, off, that person was arrested. Second, it wasn't in a library, and third, he was breaking the law. Looking at pictures doesn't break the law. (I know what some people will say, "what about child porn" well, no, looking at that isn't illegal, posession of it is. Otherwise all the investigators that search perverts houses and find it would need to be arrested a ). Quote EDIT: Maybe reading this informative article will put the masturbators' motives in a better light.Maybe you could stick to the original topic, which isn't even tangentially related to what you linked? Particularly since the Original Post has a guy looking at pictures some fundamentalist doesn't approve of (for all we know, they were just banner ads, and that got her higher morals sense tingling). And she says it was "hardcore stuff" Which I find difficult to believe because how would she know if it was if she was so high up on her pedestal of superior morality? A better question is, was she the only person to complain? Or was she just the biggest loudmouth trying to force her own moral vindictions on others? How do we even know what she is saying is true? Like I said, could have been something like a banner ad that Miss Morals saw and decided that it was her christian duty to make a lot of noise about. Was she the only one to complain? Why do I suspect that to be the case? She might want to instead think about going to grammar school: Quote And any child, or person, female, male person walking byso children and females aren't persons?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_status_of_Internet_pornography http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communications_Decency_Act http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Child_Online_Protection_Act Lets see what the legislators have done for us about this...Maybe people should mind their own business. Would Gina have been so quick to look away if he was doing his banking on line?http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2011/04/25/watching-porn-at-nyc-libraries-is-ok-officials-say/ Quote Officials from the New York Public Library stressed their computers all have filtering software to block any explicit material from minors, and they said that staff carefully monitor use of computers in the adult areas. There we have it. A solution. An adult area and a family-friendly area. Now let's patent it, before anyone does. Quote from: Transfusion on September 28, 2011, 08:40:58 PM There we have it. A solution. The solution was pretty much stated as Quantos said. People just need to mind their own damned business. Quote from: BC_Programmer on September 28, 2011, 09:17:48 PM People just need to mind their own damned business.YES. But some people simply have no self-control. So we need to enforce rules.Question: Are web sties required to put a notice on the site that some material may be offensive to some people? How did he find the porn site? Was it not through the use of keywords and meta tags? Are libraries not allowed to use filter software? Do not public libraries, in fact, limit the kind of books they have on the sheaves? It is a waste of shelf space to fill the sheaves with material that the greater number of people would never use. Or want. Or want their children to see. Using that analogy, somebody watching material of little value should give up the screen to somebody doing important research. That would be a basis to limit or monitor what people are watching on the library screens. Unless the library has more screens than visitors. Quote from: Geek-9pm on September 28, 2011, 10:45:31 PM Question:This is the basis for creating an "adult" division in a library where you need identification to prove you are not a minor to gain access... possibly where the only way to access the internet is through one's personal devices. Libraries are public services, and they can't segregate people based on porn-watching habits if the porn in question is legal. http://www.salon.com/life/feature/2011/04/28/library_porn http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=news/iteam&id=4808374 It would be fruitless to attempt to filter all the porn sites in the world. EDIT: We are spending too much time on this topic, aren't we... We should really take a mental break and go play some tennis with fuzzy yellow balls. Quote from: Geek-9pm on September 28, 2011, 10:45:31 PM to somebody doing important research. Why? Are public libraries not funded by everybody's taxes? Why should somebody doing 'important' research have more right to use the machines than anybody else? While I echo the aim here which is to prevent what most would call a frivolous use, one still has to define important. Very seldom is truly important research done in a public library. And the thing is that a public library is there to serve all members of the public, including those that might look up some kinky stuff, which is unfortunate for religious fundamentalists who don't know how to mind their own business.Transfusion, That was a good link. From now on I will be very careful about going into a Library. Not a safe place anymore. If you want to meet somebody, don't tell them go to the library. Instead, pick a local Pub. The bartenders knows how to keep order. Librarians don't get that training. No yet. Quote from: Geek-9pm on September 28, 2011, 11:21:02 PM Transfusion, I agree. That was a good read. Good job Transfusion. Quote from: Transfusion on September 28, 2011, 11:04:10 PM This is the basis for creating an "adult" division in a library where you need identification to prove you are not a minor to gain access... Am I the only one that, upon reading that, thought of some back room in the library with a beaded curtain and a neon sign above the door that reads "Adult" while MEN in trench coats furtively make their way in and out there? |
