Solve : Any non-sledgehammer method to erase dead HD??

Answer»

As some of you know my HD died on me, and I'm supposed to send it back to Compaq.
Dead to me, but I realize, that it's possible, using some pro tools, to see what's there.
I don't want Compaq to see anything, so....any advice?throw it  away*I can't. My new HD came in today, and they took my credit card number, as collateral, that I'll return fried one.Hey  Broni*

you said  fried one!

send it back a little  "Kentucky Fried Movie"

wasn't that like  1978  ??Maybe, I should give it a good bath, or some microwave cooking....LOLSome DOS tools such as um. What's it called?

Well any way you want one of these tools HD manufacturers provide for SUPPORT. The utilities either boot their own OS or are loaded in disk after you boot to DOS. Then you can try to zero fill the drive or oh oh.

DELETE PARTITION TABLES

Even if the drive can't be read, you can do these things. Of course, if the drive can't be read, and you don't have ages to waste on a "wipe procedure," there will ultimately be a way to recover some data. Even if you physically damage the drive, there are places that in theory can read platters just like a record player.

But that isn't worth Compaq's time and money. They don't care. Just DELETING the partition tables should destroy data access forever.Darik's Boot and Nuke should be sufficient for your needs...Thanks guys...
I'll give your suggestions a shot Quote from: Broni on November 08, 2007, 08:11:12 PM

I am curious about two things:

Ask Compaq.
Surely you can't be the only person ever with this concern.   I wonder how they reply to their customers.
If you do ask them,  let us know.

I thought of DBAN too,  but SINCE you said the drive was dead,  I wondered if it would even be seen.
Let us know if DBAN FOUND the drive, and if it worked.

Thanks

Actually, my worries are over (I hope).
I did call Compaq, and they said, that I don't have to worry about it, because, since my HD was pronounced dead, it goes straight to shredder.
Thank you very much for all advices.Really ? ?

I would think HDD manuf. would simply replace the BOARD and FDisk it and sell it as reconditioned.
Maybe they automatically shred the platters and replace them.I don't know what to tell you. This is what they told me. Maybe, you're right about platters, or maybe HD are too cheap these days to play with them. I dunno. Quote from: Broni on November 09, 2007, 02:14:49 PM

In other words -  you have to trust them anyway.

No choice...oh, well, just some *censored* movies....kidding...LOLI'm sure trusting them should be fine...if a customer's data got out accidently they could be sued for a pretty penny no doubt.
