Solve : Any simple way to combine two HDD's into one??

Answer»

I have a 300GB HDD, and I just got a 500 GB HDD. I was wondering if there was a simple way, either via software, or some other computer voodoo, to make these tow drives into one. Also, if that could be done without deleting what I already have on them, that would be super. Any help would be greatly appreciated.RAID 0? I think RAID would do that, but I've never tried to set it up before...

only thing being, I'm sure that when you combine the 2 HDD's using this method, the capacity is only 2X the smaller of the HDD... so you would end up with 600GB (2 x 300GB) so it doesn't seem that appealing (assuming i'm correct with this, heh) unless there's a necessity for you to do this?

Hopefully someone with more knowledge on RAID can enlighten us (me).Okay, barring that, you wouldn't happen to know a way to spread the Windows My DOCUMENTS Folder across multiple disks then would you? I moved My Documents to a different drive than the one the OS awhile back and that worked until I started running low on space. If possible I would like to put the default My Music on one drive and the My Videos on another. That would work as well. That would just be a case of putting the folder on the drive with most HD space and on the other drives, go to "properties" on the My Documents and change the target location to that. You can span the disk into one logical drive
But only in Windows XP Pro, 2000 and 2003 Server.
Should be able to find out how at Microsoft. com
It is called JBOD Just a Bunch of Disk
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_RAID_levels#Concatenation_.28JBOD_or_SPAN.29I think some basic file management steps should be taken as another alternative...

If you are filling up My Documents on a 300G HDD or to where it's become unmanageble chances are the OS is probably not running very efficiently as well.

What types of files are taking up that much room ? ?

Do you have a burner on that machine to create backups ? ?

What if that drive FAILED today with all that data gone ?

More info on how your machine is setup and perhaps we can offer some suggestions. My OS seems to be running okay. Basically I am filling up my hard drives with music and videos. What may work just as well is to have My Music on the 300 GB and My Videos on the 500 GB. Now I found a place in the registry to change the target for the individual folders, but I wasn't sure if that would be a good move. The reason I need to have them be part of the My Documents thing is because I have and Xbox 360 and a regular Xbox running XBMC, and they seem to only want to find the items I have in My Documents. Of course, any ideas or warnings or other things would be welcome at this point. As far as what I have going on system wise, I will do my best to describe it below...

Cable internet runs to a wireless linksys router, from where my computer as well as my Xbox 360 and my Xbox are WIRED into, TWO computers downstairs and a Nintendo Wii that use the wireless. My computer has Win XP Pro SP2 running on a 20 GB hdd, with another 80 GB hdd for all my programs, and then the 300 gb and 500 gb hdd's, with currently everything on the 300 gb (videos, pics, music, etc... but also backed up on the 500 gb). The pics and music are backed up to dvd, about the only thing I would lose is all the movies I have on the hdd, but those are copied from my dvd collection. Uh, I have 1.25 gb of RAM and a Celeron 2.93 Ghz processor.

Basically I am wanting to set everything up to be able to watch my movies from any room in the house without having to go hunt down the dvd, or listen to music, view pics, etc... I don't know near enough about networking to do anything really cool, but have somehow managed to Forrest Gump my way through it so far. Anyways, thanks for all the help in advance, and once again, its greatly appreciated.
