Solve : Architecture student looking for a decent Laptop?

Answer»

Not sure quite where I should be posting this...but it seems most relevant here.

I'm an architecture student looking for a suitable laptop which is also affordable. Needs to be able to run programs like AutoCad and ArchiCad, which I imagine (with what little computer knowledge I have) are a huge drain on graphics and memory.
The hard drive only needs to be decent as I can buy myself a portable hard drive if/when I need it.
My main focus is just having the right graphics card, RAM etc.

I've been considering the vaio C-25 notebook because it seems more within my price range than the Vaio SZ series, but I'm not really sure if either are ideal.

Any HELP would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking at this site:
http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/notebooks/0,39050488,40176064p,00.htm
Is it the laptop you're considering?
If it is the laptop you're considering, it says here the OS for the laptop is Windows Vista with 512 RAM. I only looked up AutoCad and for it to run on Vista, you need a computer with a minimum RAM of 2GB. The laptop can be upgraded to 2GB RAM Max so the program is balancing out the RAM memory.
If you're going to have a Windows XP Laptop, the RAM memory needed is only 512MB. For a program needing 512MB RAM, i would upgrade to 768 RAM and it would work perfectly.
Otherwise, it's a good laptop.Yes, thankyou, that's just what I was looking for.
Although I was actually using the SONY site:
http://www.sony.com.au/catalog/product.jsp?id=VGNC25GB
I'm not sure, but is the RAM listed there different to the one you looked at?Quote from http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=8446045

Additional System Requirements for 64-bit AutoCAD

    * Windows XP Professional x64 Edition and Windows Vista 64-bit
    * AMD64 or Intel EM64T processor
    * 1GB RAM, 2GB for Windows Vista 64-bit
    * 750 MB free disk space for installation
Windows Xp is a 32 bit operation system. Windows Vista is a 64 bit operating system.
It says you need 2GB RAM for Vista...

In the website you posted, it says the laptop comes with 1GB RAM but the website I posted says it comes with 512MB RAM....Well that's...uh...odd o.O
Either way, I understand the requirements a little better now, so I'll be sure to either check before I buy it or uprade it once I have.
Thanks again ^_^No problem. Maybe if you print out the requirements of your software and show it to someone in the store with the laptop, you can ask them if it will work properly on the computer. If it doesn't (like it needs more ram or something) they should include upgrades.;Don't do that, they'll rip you off.
What's your budget?
Do you have to have Vista, or would XP do?
And what sort of THINGS do you want?
For example: how much battery LIFE?
How big a screen? Quote
Windows Xp is a 32 bit operation system. Windows Vista is a 64 bit operating system.

Windows XP and Vista come in both 32 and 64 bit variations... Are you totally locked into the idea of a Sony?Wow...lots of questions...
I'll start from the top.

My budget is somewhere under 2000 AUD, hopefully under 1500 if I can get that low.
I really don't mind whether or not it has vista...in fact I think I'd prefer it without.
Battery Life isn't ultimately important as the mobility is really what I'm looking for, although if it could survive 4hrs it would definitely be preferred, since I'm assuming they measure that while using simple programs rather than the draining ones I'll use.
Although at the same time the screen size is important to me, since I don't want to strain my eyes constantly to check tiny measurements on diagrams.
The Sony ones just have a similar battery life and screen size to what I thought ideal for me, so I figured I'd start from there and work around.
The make really doesn't bother me as long as it can use autocad without dying.

Thanks in advance ^^Vista doesn't have a lot of hardware/software support (now). Maybe some XP Programs would work but not always.
As for the screen, the program you need has a screen size 1024X768 which is the same size as the laptop your currently looking at.You'll want to be looking at workstation graphics cards, 1Gb of RAM, and a dual CORE CPU if possible for that sort of work *if you're doing serious stuff that is)
Look for FireGL, FireMV, or Quadro graphics cards, and a Core 2 Duo CPU.
The graphics card is more important though.
I doubt you'll find a workstation laptop with good battery life, they usually go maybe 2 hours max.
17" screen or larger will also usually be standard.

How seriously do you need AutoCAD performance? There are some lively discussions on this very subject over at Autodesk...unofficial AutoCad forums...
