Solve : Audio is fine, but can't record sound -- help??

Answer»

I know my microphone used to work.

I have 2 and I've tried using both, non-battery operated, so no dead batteries. Using Sound Recorder, I tested both mics and got nada.

I tried downloading a Sound Card Analyzer from www.download.com but it couldn't even test the card.

The Audio Properties popup shows this: http://screencast.com/t/2K4KRIFC2Mj

Can anyone tell me why I can no longer record via microphone?
Any help would be appreciated.

Made any recent changes? Added a new sound card for example?Nope. No new sound card.

I last used the microphone about 4 months ago. Today I plugged it in and it fails to register input. I'm baffled. I'd say the sound card was dead, but my audio is working just fine.

Any other suggestions? 1. Have a NOSEY around your PC to see if the soundcard comes with any bundled software like mixers and stuff, make sure it's not muted.

2. Check the recording properties in Windows volume control to check nothing's muted in there

3. Open the "Sounds and audio devices" panel in control panel, click the Audio tab and check the selection in Sound recording.

4. Try updating your soundcard drivers? Or uninstalling and REINSTALLING them

5. Any other sound drivers/plugins that might be affecting it? DirectX and ASIO are 2 possible culprits if you have either or both of those.

Basically just have a dig around and check all sound-related settings1. Nope. Nothing's muted. No bundled software.
2. Nothing's muted.
3. Been there. See the link above in the first post for the settings.
4. That might be the nest step....
5. Have neither one.

Also, checked both microphones on a different computer - they work.

There have to be some settings somewhere that are affecting it. Other than that... I'm lost. Why does your link go to a Flash page ? ?
What other sound/audio programs did you install ? ?
Getting audio software to work properly can be extremely tricky...leaving out 1 detail can bugger a possible solution.
If the Test program didn't work i'd un=install it...it may be part of the problem...what operating system are you using? Quote from: patio on March 19, 2008, 09:27:14 PM

Why does your link go to a Flash page ? ?

Because it's a flash video of my "sounds and audio devices" from my CP. Thought someone here would see a setting that needed fixed, or at least be able to see my settings and be able to eliminate the problem. I find VISUALS are much more revealing than inept descriptions.

None that I can remember.

Hence, the video.

I agreee and did so, but remember, the problem occurred before the installation.

Also, I am running Windows XP, thank you for that reminder, Betaa.

Anything else I should describe/show to help diagnose?
