i did SEARCH i couldn't find anything on this specific topic. i have an averatec lappy 4100 series. and a sonyfx140 older lappy. both with same symptoms.

i can power on get into, change, and save bios settings. after which it immediately hangs. shows a black screen w/ blinking cursor.  no command prompt. it will not load from cd or other. i did pull hdd and do diskcheck, etc. no problems found. i copied all things so if i need to format no problem. but i can't even get into that option. help?

in the middle of putting averatec back together. SOMEONE told me to remove and reinstall memory to see it if wasn't seating correctly.

we can start w/ the sony. im hoping that SINCE has same symtpoms i can apply the fix to the averatec when i get the chance to put back together.

What OS ? ?win xp on both. honestly, the averatec is my wife's. she said she just started it up one day and it did this. she doesn't remember much before it.

the sony...its been sitting so long i have no clue. but they both do the same thing.

will take a cd and spin, but doesn't nothing else. OK but it will probably be good to start a Topic on each machine so as not to get confused...
As usual post as much info as you have on the machine details; symptoms; list of protection apps installed etc.as far as symptoms i'll start w/ the sony since that's up and powers on. just as i've said. i can only get into bios. i am able to change and save settings. as soon as i exit bios it hangs. no windows screen. nothing. just straight to a black screen w/ blinking cursor. i can RESTART with ctrl alt DEL and will do the same. Is this XP ? ?
