My HP Pavilion Notebook had a key break off and HP is going to replace the keyboard free of charge but they said it is my responsibility to back up the data. What would be the easiest way to do this. Here is what they said I would like to inform you that as the Notebook is under warranty there is no need to pay any shipping charges. It is your responsibility to back up the data. You can backup the data by connecting the hard drive to a similar model. Also, you can connect the hard drive to any Desktop using notebook to IDE Adapters and then copy the data of notebook to desktop's hard drive. Mentobe...... Is it possible to trasfer all data to my girlfriends gateway laptop??Your data yes. Your Windows and programs no, unless you can use one of the programs like GHOST, TrueImage, Or BootIt NG. None of them are free. Do you have a shiny Windows CD or a restore CD and all of the programs you were using?I have "Application and Driver Recovery DVD" Contains software and drivers already installed. So what about programs like Microsoft OFFICE...?? and how would I tranfer my files to her computer?just run a normal windows backup (backup the whole hard drive system, everything .. hey it might take a while but it will be worthit) save the file to a DVD or your GF's pc across the network (depends on the size of the file) now if HP completely stuff up installing a new keyboard your safe. you can format the hard drive reinstall windows and restore the backup ,, really its quite simple and doesnt have to be complicated. the only thing that might complicate things is the size of the backup file , if its to large you might like to consider a USB external hard driveso do you think HP will interfer with my hardrive and files or do they just say that to save their own butts...Quote I have "Application and Driver Recovery DVD" Contains software and drivers already installed. During the repair process "your hard drive will be re-imaged if it fails QUALITY Assurance testing", and in this event you will not have the opportunity to retrieve your data once the repair is complete. At this stage, I suggest you to remove the hard drive from the notebook and keep it with you before sending the notebook as hard drive has nothing to do with the issue. I hope this helps. Did Office come loaded on your machine? Is there no Windows CD? Since HP, probably not, and you may have needed to make a restore set when you first got your machine.
