Solve : Bad Hard Drive?

Answer»

I have a HDD that appears in Device Manager, but windows xp doesn't ASSIGN a drive letter. tried installing in a new system but xp is unable to format the drive. anything i can do or is it a BIN job?Try running chkdsk /r from a command line, use recovery console if you have the XP disc.

This will let you know if it finds any errors.
If you have a bootable DOS disc or Windows 98 disc try fdisk and creating a Pirmary Dos partition.

If it FAILS to verify drive integrity then it's a bin job. Thanks for the help, drive is dead.LR:

LAST ditch effort to save data on the drive:

Place it in a sealed bag in the freezer over NIGHT.  Take it out the next day and install it as a slave in a system with Windows installed on the master drive.  If Windows is able to read the drive, copy as many files as you are able to the master drive before the slave drive grinds to a halt again.
