Solve : Batch file using the Xcopy command?

Answer»

Hello All, I need a help to create batch files using the Xcopy command.

My requirement is very simple.

How to write a batch file to copy (For an example out 100 folders I need to copy only 40 folders I have folder name list in a text file) a folders with files from one network folder to a other newt work folder using xcopy command.
Does the list have full path names?
Are you going to also copy folders?
Give an example of maybe or six lines of the text file.Easiest would be to use the EXCLUDE instruction and specify a list of files to exclude so that all others are included. You will also need to add exclusion paths with the file names that are outside ( deeper ) in the directory tree. Otherwise if you just list file names with extensions, the exclusion rules will only apply to the root of which the batch or instruction has been executed from, and if you didnt WANT valentines_day.pdf included and its in say c:\my_data\valentines_jokes\ and the instruction or batch was run from c:\my_data\ it will copy the valentines_day.pdf from c:\my_data\valentines_jokes\valentines_day.pdf

So your exclusion list in a file such as exclude_files.txt will be like this for running it within C:\my_data\

Quote

last_years_taxes.pdf
C:\my_data\valentines_jokes\valentines_day.pdf
lectures.doc
C:\my_data\college\homework_week5.pdf
accounting_week6.xls

for these files that you do not want to have included in the xcopy instruction

I generally use this when I want all files except for say EXE files to be copied from one location to another though. This saves from having to have individual lines to include every file extension type when there are many and just a few that you dont want. So the RULE is set to xcopy all except the exclusion list which includes the few file extension types.

Here is info on all the xcopy switches from Windows 7 Pro:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Users\Dave>xcopy/?
Copies files and directory trees.

XCOPY source [destination] [/A | /M] [/D[:date]] [/P] [/S [/E]] [/V] [/W]
[/C] [/I] [/Q] [/F] [/L] [/G] [/H] [/R] [/T] [/U]
[/K] [/N] [/O] [/X] [/Y] [/-Y] [/Z] [/B]
[/EXCLUDE:file1[+file2][+file3]...]

source Specifies the file(s) to copy.
destination Specifies the location and/or name of new files.
/A Copies only files with the archive attribute set,
doesn't change the attribute.
/M Copies only files with the archive attribute set,
turns off the archive attribute.
/D:m-d-y Copies files changed on or after the specified date.
If no date is given, copies only those files whose
source time is newer than the destination time.
/EXCLUDE:file1[+file2][+file3]...
Specifies a list of files containing STRINGS. Each string
should be in a separate line in the files. When any of the
strings match any part of the absolute path of the file to be
copied, that file will be excluded from being copied. For
example, specifying a string like \obj\ or .obj will exclude
all files underneath the directory obj or all files with the
.obj extension respectively. /P Prompts you before creating each destination file.
/S Copies directories and subdirectories except empty ones.
/E Copies directories and subdirectories, including empty ones.
Same as /S /E. May be used to modify /T.
/V Verifies the size of each new file.
/W Prompts you to press a key before copying.
/C Continues copying even if errors occur.
/I If destination does not exist and copying more than one file,
assumes that destination must be a directory.
/Q Does not display file names while copying.
/F Displays full source and destination file names while copying.
/L Displays files that would be copied.
/G Allows the copying of encrypted files to destination that does
not support encryption.
/H Copies hidden and system files also.
/R Overwrites read-only files.
/T Creates directory structure, but does not copy files. Does not
include empty directories or subdirectories. /T /E includes
empty directories and subdirectories.
/U Copies only files that already exist in destination.
/K Copies attributes. Normal Xcopy will reset read-only attributes.
/N Copies using the generated short names.
/O Copies file ownership and ACL information.
/X Copies file audit settings (implies /O).
/Y Suppresses prompting to confirm you want to overwrite an
existing destination file.
/-Y Causes prompting to confirm you want to overwrite an
existing destination file.
/Z Copies networked files in restartable mode.
/B Copies the Symbolic Link itself versus the target of the link.
/J Copies using unbuffered I/O. Recommended for very large files.

The switch /Y may be preset in the COPYCMD environment variable.
This may be overridden with /-Y on the command line.

If the list is a simple folder list then test this:

Code: [Select]@echo off
for /f "usebackq delims=" %%a in ("folder list.txt") do xcopy "\\server\share\%%a\*.*" "\\server\share\target folder\%%a\" /s/h/e/k/f/c/z

If there are errors then show some lines from your file as Geek mentioned.
