Solve : Big Computer Problem? |
|
Answer» Hello,
Buy and fit a new hard drive and reinstall Windows. Yeah, I was thinking I might have to do that. A couple of questions though. I read in other places that if I reinstall Windows on a new hard drive, and then connect/install the other (broken) hard drive, there might be a chance for me to copy the files from it. I have an external hard drive. Is there a way for me to install Windows on the external hard drive and have the computer boot from that? My next question is: What service would you recommend to recover my files on the broken hard drive? Thanks. -Tom Quote from: CAFANTOM on May 11, 2010, 01:47:22 PM Is there a way for me to install Windows on the external hard drive and have the computer boot from that? The short answer is, you cannot install windows on an external hard drive. Quote My next question is: What service would you recommend to recover my files on the broken hard drive? If you mean a data recovery software package, I think this will be a waste of money. That disk is dead. The files have gone to heaven. unless -- maybe! -- you USE a data recovery company. I cannot recommend any particular one, I do not even know what country you live in. They are very very expensive. Hundreds or thousands of dollars. Ive installed xp,vista, and 7 on one. i know a friend that runs his computer via usb so u can install on a external hard drive. (vista and 7 is the easiest to install on) if you mean booting with an external hard drive im not 100% sure about that. theres tons of lionks how. heres a simple ehow tellin how http://www.ehow.com/how_4814278_install-windows-external-hard-drive.htmlQuote from: johngetter on May 13, 2010, 08:14:31 AM Samon you can install windows on an external hard drive. (vista and 7 is the easiest to install on) I know that with a number of steps that are quite difficult for the average user it is possible to persuade Windows to install on external hard drives. It is a geek thing, and the results are not usually very stable. That is why I wrote that "the short answer" is that you cannot do this. I would think that you were a serious person, if instead of just posting to tell me how wrong I am, you actually posted good clear step by step instructions showing how to do this. Microsoft Windows is designed not to be installed on external drives. how about running "dban" on the drive and then starting from scratch? if the hard drive is still good which is somthing that might be indicted? google dban for the LINK ,I don't have it though, hope this might help, I had to do this once on one of my harddrives.here is a link that might help too. http://www.bootdisk.com/OK try opening your external casing and install it into your desktop...if you need an IDE/SATA converter, they are cheap...(cheaper then a new hard drive) |
