A 3.5 inch SATA hard drive. You pick the size. The ticking is a big hint. If you want, take it to a repair shop.

It depends on where you want to purchase it and how MUCH you want to spend and how many GB you want. Would Suggest taking a look at the HD you have already. If you could get a hold of a spare HD with Sata connections. Maybe borrow it from a friend or another computer you would know for sure. Motherboard most likely will be pricier and not as easy to replace. Start with the most obvious. It is easy enough to replace the HD yourself. No need to take it to a repair shop. They will charge you an arm and a leg. Just google, "how do I replace/install a sata HARDRIVE" Just make sure you unplug everything before you open the case and ground yourself by touching the metal case to avoid static electricity.

No need to take it to a repair shop.

When I suggested he did that, I was picking up on this remark made by the OP...

is everyone sure it's not the motherboard

The answer is, of course, "No, of course we're not 100% sure. We are in Europe, Australia, Idaho, Kamchatka, wherever. We are going on what you told us. It's Christmas Eve. Santa is coming. We cannot ACTUALLY see or TOUCH your computer. However we think it probably is the hard drive. However, if you don't feel confident about the advice you are getting here, take it to a repair shop."

But I wrote it in a shorter FORM, using less words, and kind of expected the reader to grasp the underlying message. Perhaps I was mistaken...

i understand. i have winxp and support is ending i believe around june next year. i am tired of pc after 20 years and want to get a mac. question is, is there a harddrive i can buy for my broken desktop pc xp pro computer for now and then switch it over to a mac computer, i have no idea about macs. tyvm
i did a search and all i got were external drives and i just now figured out why i think, mac is all-in-one so could i get an external harddrive for the xp and then plug it into a new mac? am going to see if i can get my broken harddrive fixed, cheapest solution i can find
