Solve : building a low bugdet pc?

Answer»

ok im building a REALLY low budget pc, and am wonderin if these parts are worth it:

this is the case:

this is the mobo:

this is the PROCCESSOR fan:

this is the ram:

this is the HDD:

the proccessor chip and cd drive i will buy used idk what im getting for them yet, but the price went up from 130.79 for all of that to 136.31. minus the HDD, my dad is paying for that, the proccessor, and combo drive. well tell me what u think about it, its just a low-budget pc, so i want to know what i can do with it when i get more moneyLooks like you did some good bargain hunting.

There are a few things I would do different.

I'll never again buy a mainboard with a VIA chipset for an Intel processor. There are always little glitches and devices that end up being incompatable or work poorly with the system. After using a couple mainboards with Intel chipsets, I find my hard drive doesn't even get fragmented half as fast. The rock-solid stability and lack of aggravation of having an Intel chipset in your mainboard would be worth 20 more bucks or so in my opinion. I have a socket 478 from GIGABYTE that I really like (Intel chipset, rock stable, not expensive) Maybe check out some GIGABYTE boards. Also, doesn't look like that board will take a Prescott CPU which may limit your choices.

Found this board for $63.50 shipped, less than $10.00 more than the board you were looking at. It has an Intel chipset and is Prescott ready. VERY worth the extra $10.00. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813128305

The memory you chose has a CAS latency of 3. There are others with a CAS latency of 2.5 for the same price or a buck more with no horror stories in the user reviews. There'd be a slight boost in performance by choosing one of those.

You can get the same hard drive in the 80GB flavor for $4.00 more in price, but $1.00 less shipping. Might as well get twice the drive for $3.00!!! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144122

Fan's gonna' be noisy, but the price is right... Just warning ya'...

Case looks like a great value. Might want to upgrade the power supply someday if you start adding more hard drives, big time video card, etc... This system could be VERY fast depending mostly on how much you spend on the CPU. Anything from a chip in the 2Ghz range with a 533 FSB to a chip in the 3Ghz+ range with Hyper-Threading and an 800 FSB... Add a good video card someday and it will be a very nice system, capable of pretty much anything.

Hope I've been some help. Don't know if you're looking for DVD playback capabilities or a CD / DVD burner... If you're just looking for a plain-old CD ROM drive, I have an extra I'd be willing to send you.

Good luck and have fun building your new system!!!

RoyIve found a good deal for building a PC outta used parts, someone that my dad knows is willing to sell me everything i need exept for the CD drive and the HDD for about $75. i know the mobo will be a 478 with a P4, and i will be getting the old Khypermedia CDR/RW drive outta my dads PC when he UPGRADES, and his 40 gig HDD, i have found some speakers to order with my extra cash, and i will also order a DVD ROM drive for it.

heres the speakers:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16836150008

i know people have complained of the left speaker, and "boomy bass", but i like alot of bass, and as long as the left speaker keeps workin ill be happy, even if it crackels.

And here is the DVD ROM drive:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827101668

it seems pretty decent...

for my b-day in August i will get another HDD, probably an 80, or an exteral drive, if its enternal i will use RAID drivers if my hardware is compatable, and then il have 120 gigs, or more. so ill be happy with that, i dont think i will ever fill it all, even if i start to use alot of it, then i can always get another HDD.

Thanks for the offer of the CD drive, but i think the CDR\RW drive should hold out another two or three years... or atleast i hope it lasts that long... I will post the exact specs on my pc when its built.
"if its enternal i will use RAID drivers if my hardware is compatable,"

You might want to research this notion a little.meaning? i might end up with slighly outdated hardware\software, so i dont know if the internal HDD will be compatable with raid drivers. or the mobo might not be, ect ect...
Why spend $20.00 on a DVD ROM, when you can get a super-fast, reliable, dual layer DVD / CD burner for $40.00 these days? Especially since you're spending way less than you planned... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827152058

Don't let your dad put his garbage in your system just so he can upgrade his without feeling guilty!!!... LOLreally i dont care what hardware is in it, all that i care about is that its functional and reliable. ive decieded to forget gettin speakers and just use my rigged cable to hook my pc up to my stereo, im gonna use the extra money to get three games:

ok, so my original plan has been totaly scraped, my dad is buildin him another, with my money, and givin me his other one. it has a MSI micro atx mobo, with a 2.6ghz celeron D proccesser,800mhz front bus, two front usb, 4 rear usb, 256mb of ram, 32x/42x/48x/52x K hyper media cd r/rw drive, 40 gig quantom fireball HDD, and a 64 bit video card, which we cant get to work , the case is a Micro atx full tower, has 4 external 5.25" bays, and one 3.5" external bay, 4 3.5" internal bays, a 350w psu, and a REALLY noisy 80mm rear fan which i will replace soon. o well, atleast its somthin... im gonna upgrade more later on, ill probably get a better case for one thing, a 256 vid card, another hdd, a one gig stick of ram (thats the first thing on my list), a DVD burner with Nero Express (thats the second), and a DVD rom drive so i can copy CD's DVD's and DVD ROM's (probably the last thing on my list next to the fan), and some random accessories, like a web cam with a built in mic, new monitor, keyboard, mouse, ect ect, for now i have to deal with the old POS hardware i have, luckly i do have an old 17" NEC biegh CRT monitor, its a pretty good monitor, CONSIDERING its age... i will give the old K hyper media drive to my bro for the PC my dads gonna build outta the old gateway sever sized tower, once i get the DVD burner. and ive got ALOT of old cards that run on the black slots from a time long since forgotten, but luckly i do have some PCI stuff thats worth keepin. and if you can name the long black slots on old mobo's then tell me what there called, ive been wonderin that for a long long time...
