Solve : Can i have 3 IDE harddrives?

Answer»

Is it possible, to have 3 internal hard drives for a computer that uses just IDE. I currently have 2 hard drives. These are fitted as FOLLOWS. Primary Master/Primary Slave-Both HardDrives. I have my dvd drive on the Secondary Master. Now, will i be able to put ANOTHER hard drive on the secondary slave? Thanks!Yes, no problemThanks It will work but you may have issues with speed if you have a DVD drive and a hard drive on the same IDE channel, as the channel may slow down to the speed of the lowest device (the DVD drive).

Another option as well is adding a PCI/IDE card ...2 drives per CONNECTION on the card for a total of 4 more drives plus what you have.Open Question: If he stays with just the two IDE ports on motherboard, would it be better if the third hard drive is Secondary Master (SM), and the DVD is Secondary Slave (SS) so that the hard drive's controller controls the secondary IDE bus.

Let the feeding frenzy BEGIN...Concerning the speed issue, it doesn't matter which way round the hard drive and optical drive are arranged.

The IDE bus is controlled by the IDE controller hardware.

Which slows down to the level of the slowest device connected...the optical drive.everything happens that way. ANYTHING connected in a series or a "chain" runs as fast as the slowest guy.
